New ECA Structure
2017 certainly constituted a turning point for the EHF Court of Arbitration. Following the EHF ordinary Congress held in November 2016 in St. Wolfgang, Austria, the ECA will make a step forward as a modern sports arbitration court open to all its stakeholders.
As part of the reform, the following will apply:
- One Vice-President of the ECA Council is nominated by the Professional Handball Board*
- Nominations of arbitrators by all groups representing the interests of players, clubs and leagues.
- Nomination of arbitrators for renewable periods of 6 years.
These substantial modifications are part of a constant willingness to ensure that ECA remains a professional, independent and modern court of arbitration.
It is already within this perspective that, in 2016, the arbitration costs had been adapted and reduced for some situations. Hence, when bringing a dispute before the ECA after exhaustion of all EHF internal legal remedies, the amount remains the same and an advance of €5.000 must be paid.
Yet, when the dispute is brought within the framework of any other kind of situation, the advance depends on the amount in dispute, €2.500 for amounts up to €30.000 and €5.000 for amounts over €30.000.
